First Impressions

“Have you ever been to an Erin Fetherston show before?”  The eccentric woman sitting in the front row asked me.

“No, I haven’t,” I said looking down at my Tory Burch flats, skinny jeans, and Fashion Week 2007 volunteer shirt.

“It’s unlike anything else,” she said with a smile.

And sure enough this mystery woman was right.  The crowd grew quiet as a single spotlight illuminated the lustrous Zooey Deschanel as she sweetly sang, “Dream a Little Dream of Me.”

Suddenly I was transported from the realities of my life as a little NYU freshman to a fantastical dream world of tulle, ruffles, and shooting star-inspired mini dresses (one of which I attempted to buy years later at 4am on eBay just to get outbid at the last nanosecond).

It was then, staring out at Lily Cole and the other models cascading down the runway, that I knew this was it.  I felt like a little puzzle piece finally finding a world and mold that fit me entirely, making me feel like a piece of a whole rather than a wandering part.

The lights came back on, and Erin, who I thought was one of the models before the show, took her bow with her iconic, blonde bangs perfectly in place.

As soon as I got home that evening, I e-mailed the website.  I attached my juvenile resume complete with high school accolades and wrote, “I know that you are based in Paris, but if you ever move to New York, I would love to intern for you.”

Indeed Erin moved to New York a month later, and we set up arrangements to meet at the Mercer Hotel before my accounting class.  She asked for me to bring “my book,” but as a business student with an interest in art and fashion, I couldn’t draw a stick figure, let alone an entire book of sketches and designs.

Erin then instructed me to make a collage embodying the Erin Fetherston brand image.  So, my go-big-or-go-home attitude and I headed to Staples, but instead of buying a piece of 8.5” x 11” construction paper, like a normal human being, I purchased a poster board, which I filled up with little pieces of tulle, images of Alice in Wonderland, and enchanted forests.

As I waited for Erin in the lobby of the Mercer Hotel, I saw these guys sitting on the couch opposite from me.  They had Louis Vuitton luggage, and kept talking about “the band.”  Figuring that they were legit members of society, I started talking to them.

“So, what band are you with?” I asked politely.

         “Maroon 5,” Adam Levine responded.

“Of course you are,” I said with my cheeks fading from ballet slipper pink to fuchsia.  Just as I was getting a very good look at my feet and perfecting my sheepish expression, Erin came over, eyes darting between me, Maroon 5, the life-size shrine I had created to capture the Erin Fetherston brand image, and my Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dress.

My overzealous nature had made me look like psycho fan, but after chatting for a second, Erin realized that I was not crazy, just a run of the mill overachiever, and I started interning the next day.

Now four years, a bachelor’s degree, and a first job later, I’m back with Erin Fetherston as the new Digital Brand Coordinator.  If you have any questions about Erin or the brand, please feel free to e-mail me at Katie@ErinFetherston.com or tweet me @ErinFetherston. Thanks so much, and I can’t wait to hear from you!
